Breaking and Pre-Training

The breaking process is a key part of any young thoroughbred’s education. Our team tailor this process to the individual needs and development of each horse. Listening to and working with the trainers. The facilities and peaceful setting at Martley Hall ensure a calm environment, with lunging and long-reining integral to any youngster’s pre-training programme.

Whether your horses are returning from injury or just require time to mature, they will benefit from the peaceful surroundings at Martley Hall Stud away from the chaotic life of a training yard. Our team will create a personalised rehabilitation / pre-training exercise plan for their needs.

Last Autumn I sent three horses to Martley Hall for their winter break followed by two yearlings from the Tattersalls’s sales in Newmarket. Lee and Helen started the breaking process with the two yearlings and by the time they got to the trainer’s yard they were really comfortable with saddle and bridle and easily accepted the rider.

Resting Racehorses

Racing yards are busy bustling places. Martley Hall offers total peace and rest in the calm and quiet of the Suffolk countryside. All our paying guests whether staying on rest, or rehabilitation are assessed and photographed on arrival and carefully monitored during their stay. The team manages each horse individually to ensure its personal needs are provided for. We can cater for all needs from box rest, or horse walker to turn out paddocks. All trainers and owners are sent regular updates and photos to show their progress and ensure they leave Martley Hall in tip-top condition.

We find our racehorses very much benefit from a mental and physical break away from the hustle and bustle of the training establishment and come back refreshed and eager to get on with things. Which is why I board my horses for their winter break under the expert care of Lee and Helen Barber, at the beautiful Martley Hall Stud in Suffolk, where the five-star accommodation set in over 200 acres of grasslands is the perfect winter break venue for them.

Enigmatic during and after his break at Martley Hall

In January 2018 I purchased Enigmatic, my trainer Joseph Parr advised me to send him to Martley Hall to rest before he went back in to training. After a few months with Lee and Helen he returned to the training yard and went straight out to win his first run in May of that year at Yarmouth. Enigmatic has had continued success after his rests at Martley Hall, in fact in May 2019 his first run of the season, after spelling at Martley was winning the Manny Mercer Apprentice Handicap at Ascot.

As owners of a small thoroughbred stud with limited acreage ourselves, we are very lucky to be so close to Martley Hall Stud which is the perfect place for us to rest our racehorses when they need a break from training, or to send one that needs a little extra attention or education. We fully recommend Martley Hall Stud and Lee & Helen’s expertise for all aspects of thoroughbred care. It is a wonderful peaceful setting with excellent facilities, where we know our racehorses receive the best care and attention they deserve and need.

Martley Hall Stud is a fantastic place. I have been using it for a few years now. The horses are extremely well looked after and always come back into training looking fantastic and ready to go. The team are incredibly knowledgeable and can manage horses of all ages from unbroken yearlings to racehorses in need of a personalised rehabilitation programme, or just resting away from the training yard. They are highly recommended be by me and my team.
